Sometimes the best growth happens when you’re not trying it in the classic way. Crystal Birchmeier of Happy Hooves Wellness built her entire business around that idea — and this week, she demonstrated it perfectly with a relaxed questions-for-candy-styled presentation.
Instead of slides, Crystal brought a quiz about her business and client experience. Border 2 Border broke into teams that didn’t matter too much because the answers just flew out and candy changed hands at a pace that suggested we were all a bit more competitive than initially believed. It was relaxed, fun, and surprisingly rich — which, it turns out, is exactly the environment Crystal creates for the people who come out to Happy Hooves Wellness.
Her work is rooted in experiential learning — the kind that bypasses your defenses because you’re too busy being present to overthink. The animals are the key.
Horses, she explained, are uniquely attuned to human emotional states. They respond to what you’re actually bringing into the space, not what you’re pretending to bring. That honest feedback — non-judgmental, immediate, and impossible to argue with — creates openings that traditional therapeutic or coaching settings sometimes can’t. Goats contribute something different: pure, chaotic curiosity. They investigate everything, assume nothing, and have a remarkable gift for pulling people out of their own heads and into the moment. Sheep round out the herd in their own quiet way, adding texture to an environment that’s less about structure and more about presence.
Crystal’s ultimate goal is deceptively simple and genuinely profound: to help people develop a deep sense of belonging within themselves. Not belonging to a group or a place — within. The farm is just where it happens to occur to you.
That theme — meeting yourself where you actually are — ran underneath everything she shared. The animals model it. The setting invites it. Crystal facilitates it.
If any of this resonates, the easiest first step is to register for an open class through Crystal’s website at hhooves.com. If you’d prefer something more personal, she offers a 45-minute discovery session and farm tour — a gentle, low-pressure way to see if Happy Hooves is the right fit.
And if you hadn’t yet made it out to a Border 2 Border Business Connections meeting, Crystal was the kind of presenter you’d be glad you showed up for. Come find your footing with us — we meet weekly on Wednesdays and for guests, we always make room.
