How a Great Financial Planner Would Spend Their Full Year

by | Sep 9, 2026 | Member Spotlights | 0 comments

The best professionals rarely get credit for their best work, it often happens out of customer eyeshot. A contractor who plans around and knows how to avoid structural problems before they cause lasting damage won’t be rewarded outright, but will eventually by way of successful jobs and strong reputation. The value often shows up in what never went wrong or took a long time to go right — which makes it easy to overlook, and easy to underpay for.

Matt Bowden of Two Bird Wealth Strategies opened his Border 2 Border presentation today with a version of that same question: what does your financial advisor actually do between the one or two meetings you have with them each year? For most people, the honest answer is “not much that they can see.” A statement in the mail, a check-in when the market dips, silence otherwise.

Matt took his time to walk us through Two Bird’s answer to that gap — an annual service calendar that runs whether or not a client picks up the phone:

At the start of the year, the firm reviews and rebalances portfolios, executes tax-loss harvesting, and prepares qualified charitable distribution letters for eligible clients. Planning meetings then cover cashflow analysis, distribution strategy, Roth conversion opportunities, retirement contributions, and a full estate plan review — beneficiaries, power of attorney, and any changes in estate law that might affect a family’s plan. At year’s end, the same discipline repeats: another investment review, another round of tax planning, required minimum distributions handled before December 31, followed by a review meeting covering tax returns, insurance, and everything decided over the previous twelve months.

The model is built for a specific kind of client — someone who wants coordination across investments, taxes, insurance, and estate planning rather than a single-product relationship, and who’d rather delegate that complexity than manage it themselves.

The broader lesson travels well past wealth management. Any business built on trust benefits from making its invisible work visible — showing clients not just what you did, but what you’re doing on their behalf right now, without being asked. Structure earns confidence in ways that reactive service never quite manages.

If your own financial life could use that kind of proactive coordination, Matt Bowden and the team at Two Bird Wealth Strategies are worth connecting with for a conversation. And if you haven’t yet experienced a Wednesday morning with Border 2 Border, come see for yourself why our members keep showing up!
