This week, Crystal Birchmeier of Happy Hooves Wellness introduced us to her newest offering — a gentle, grounded, and deeply intentional program called Mounted Movement.
Crystal grew up riding horses but hasn’t ridden in years — not because she fell out of love with it, but because she deeply cares for the well-being of the animals she works with. Traditional horseback riding can be physically taxing on horses, especially when done at speed or with repeated stress. That’s why Crystal developed Mounted Movement — a walking-only, relationship-focused program built on rhythm, connection, and mutual awareness.
🐴 Why Walking Matters:
Mounted Movement is grounded in science and emotion alike. By riding only at the horse’s natural walking gait, participants access the core benefits of horseback riding — without overstimulation or physical strain:
- Rhythmic, 3D motion mimics natural human gait and promotes balance
- Nervous system regulation through calm, predictable rhythm (like rocking a baby)
- Mind-body integration via posture, breath, and awareness
- Safety and consistency, especially for those with anxiety or sensory challenges
🧠 Supports Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):
Crystal’s program directly supports key SEL skills:
- Self-awareness and self-management
- Social awareness and relationship building
- Responsible decision-making
It’s also backed by research — with walking-based equine programs shown to improve stress reduction, emotional regulation, communication, and self-regulation in children and teens.
At its heart, Mounted Movement is about creating safe, empowering spaces for both horses and humans — especially for individuals not seeking more intensive therapeutic riding programs.
