The Description Doesn’t Always Cover the Job

Most careers are pretty straightforward. You learn your trade, get hired and learn some handbook procedures, meet your colleagues, digest key workplace dynamics, charge ahead. Then collect a paycheck; repeat. But sometimes they can contain an accumulation of moments — the ones that weren’t mentioned in any description — that ultimately shape how we think and work, permanently.

Travis Otto of Cornerstone Real Estate stepped up at Border 2 Border this week with an impromptu presentation, sharing some highlights from years of those moments, and it was one of the more authentic conversations we’ve recently had.

His first listing, as a Realtor, set the tone early. The house went under contract above asking price — a strong start — then a crawlspace inspection revealed flooding. What followed was four separate sales, each falling apart in turn, before the house finally closed. A lesson in resilience that no training prepares you for.

From there, the stories turned more personal. A woman quietly covering her late parent’s mortgage payments on her own credit card. A widow left without access to a single account or document after her husband’s long illness — months of knowing the end was near, and they never once talked about what would need to happen after. Both stories landed the same way: having the hard conversations to prepare well for the end isn’t near as difficult as being a loved one you leave to figure it out for you.

Turning back (in a moment) to positive, one of the most memorable involved a couple whose foreclosing home — which they’d purchased for their daughter — was threatening their credit as they entered retirement. After exhausting options, they decided the only coarse was to sell their built family home and moved into the daughter’s. The closing day they expected to be devastating took an unexpected turn: the incoming family was so visibly excited to build their life in what the older couple had spent decades creating that the mood shifted entirely. Grief and gratitude, in the same room. And a great lesson on finding silver lining through sadness, in someone else’s joy.

Real estate, it turns out, is as much about helping people to navigate some of the hardest chapters of their lives, as it is about square footage and closing costs. Travis has clearly learned to meet people in both.

If you’re thinking about buying or selling — or know someone who is — Travis Otto at Cornerstone Real Estate brings both the expertise and the perspective that only experience builds. He’s worth a conversation.
