The Power of Being Intentional With Your Investments

by | Jan 21, 2026 | Member Spotlights | 0 comments

It’s easy to think of investing as what you own. But just as important—and far less understood—is where those investments live and how they’re taxed over time.

This week, Matt Bowden of Two Bird Wealth Strategies brought that idea to life with a fast-paced, interactive Tax Strategy Challenge—a 15-question true/false quiz designed to spark curiosity and reveal how seemingly small differences in investment location can quietly add up to big costs. (or savings!)

Rather than lecturing, Matt used each answer as a jumping-off point to explain how tax strategy influences long-term outcomes. From asset location and charitable giving to Medicare surcharges and Roth conversions, the common thread was simple: nearly as important as what you make in investments, is what you keep after taxes.

Several questions highlighted how strategies like placing the right investments in the right accounts, donating appreciated assets, or harvesting losses can dramatically change after-tax results. Others touched on less obvious realities—like how large income events can affect Medicare premiums for multiple years, or how different investment vehicles are taxed in ways many people don’t expect.

What stood out wasn’t any single tactic, but the bigger picture Matt kept bringing us back to: smart planning isn’t about chasing loopholes—it’s about understanding the rules well enough to make informed, intentional, long-term plans.

Matt’s approachable style made complex topics feel accessible, reinforcing the value of having a trusted guide who helps clients see not just what’s happening now, but what it means years down the road.

If you’re curious how tax strategy fits into your overall financial plan, connect with Matt Bowden of Two Bird Wealth Strategies today! And if you’d like to keep learning alongside professionals who value clarity and shared insight, we’d love to have you visit Border to Border Business Connections. on a Wednesday morning.
